Background: Baroreflex failure increased the variability of left atrial pressure (LAP) and predisposed to pulmonary edema. We investigated the impact of baroreflex failure on LAP in chronic heart failure (CHF) model rats. Methods: In Sprague-Dawley rats, we induced CHF by ligating coronary artery for 4 weeks. Baroreflex failure was created by sino-aortic denervation (SAD). We measured LAP telemetrically and compared it among 3 groups; Control (n = 4), CHF (n = 5) and CHF+SAD (n = 5). Results: Mean LAP were significantly increased in CHF groups compared with Control (Fig. 1, Fig. 2). In CHF+SAD, LAP variability and the duration of LAP above 35 mmHg significantly increased compared with CHF (Fig. 3). Conclusions: The presence of baroreflex failure increased LAP variability in CHF rats. It may be involved with the pathogenesis of pulmonary edema in CHF.
