Background: Several reports indicate that infections are associated with stroke events in patients
implanted with a left ventricular assist device (LVAD). Although C-reactive protein
(CRP) is a representative marker of acute and chronic infection, it has not been established
as a prognostic marker of stroke. Methods and Results: We analyzed 85 patients who had LVAD implantation between 2012 and 2016 at Osaka
University hospital. The patients with the highest tertile of CRP at 1 month after
LVAD implantation had a higher incidence of stroke (Figure). They also had a similar
age, sex, and INTERMACS profile, and lower right ventricular stroke work index compared
to the lowest tertile group. Conclusion: CRP at 1 month after LVAD implantation may be associated with RV function and predict
a future stroke event.
